Michelin Guide 2023
On the 22nd November in Toledo, Michelin unveiled the restaurant selection for the 2023 Michelin Guide, with Portugal obtaining great culinary achievements.
The 2023 Michelin Guide features 38 Portuguese restaurants, 7 with 2 stars and 31 with 1 star. 5 new stars area given to restaurants in Lisbon and Porto (Encanto (Lisbon), Euskalduna Studio (Porto), Kabuki Lisboa (Lisbon), Kanazawa (Lisbon) and Le Monument (Porto), 3 restaurants were distinguished with a Green Star, awarded for sustainable gastronomy, and 38 were considered BIB Gourmand. There will now be a total of 45 Michelin stars awarded to 38 restaurants across the country.
However, the best news is that from 2024 Portugal will have its own Michelin guide for the first time (it currently shares with Spain). This is a huge achievement for Portugal with Michelin observing Portugal’s culinary movement over the last few years and choosing to showcase its gastronomic scene with the aim of promoting Portugal as an unmissable European gastronomic destination.
Gwendal Poullennec, International Director of the Michelin Guides declared, “We were delighted to see how younger chefs are taking the lead and embarking on their own journeys, in many cases flying the flag of reinterpreted regional or fusion cuisines.” Adding, “In turn, vegan options are gradually forging ahead on menus, something which was already occurring in other European countries. Finally, the growing number of Michelin Green Stars is another illustration of the flourishing and significant commitment of restaurants in Spain and Portugal to a more sustainable gastronomy”.
